The Style Child: Midi Town
Madewell skirt and fedora, Ralph Lauren sweater, Matisse booties
The midi skirt. I've always admired its ladylike silhouette and curve-defining abilities, and I've forever dreamt of taking this 1950s staple for a spin. So I was more than happy when the midi stole the spotlight at fall/winter fashion week and became the subject of countless magazine editorials—from Teen to British Vogue. You can bet my inspiration board was overwhelmed with runway shots from the midi skirts at Balenciaga and Rodarte as well as the originals from Christian Dior's New Look.

But I soon began to wonder how I, a teenage high schooler,—neither a 6-foot-tall model nor a Betty Draper-esque housewife—could pull of a midi skirt.
That's where Marc Jacobs comes in. The eccentric designer sent a myriad of uber-cool yet completely wearable midis down the Marc by Marc Jacobs runway. One was slim with a metallic finish, some more fluid with graphic prints, and others preppy and button adorned. What unites them all is Marc's signature, quirky styling, like slouched ankle socks, clunky oxfords, and wide-brimmed hats. But as much as I wish I could, I can't parade around in a head-to-toe midi look right off the runway.

I can, however, translate the feel of Marc by Marc Jacobs into my own unique (and preferably less expensive) ensemble.
Taking a cue form the collection, I donned a berry-hued midi with a cable knit sweater and rustic fedora. To bring my own personal style into the mix, I added a leather shoulder bag, suede ankle booties, and knitted tights (the latter was primarily to hide my ghostly pale legs). After wearing my skirt to school and walking around town for a bit, I came to the following conclusion: pulling off a midi—or any piece, really—is about more than just the right styling. It's about feeling beautiful and confident.
